KIRKUS REVIEW

This vivid account of Perry's missions to Japan lives up to the editors' high standards evidenced by other titles in the American Heritage Junior Library. Robert L. Reynolds, who is responsible for the lively text, seems to have done a thorough job of research; his method of organization-- from a careful history of Americo-Japanese relations to the establishment of Japan's Open Door-- is notable. Lavishly illustrated with fine reproductions of prints, drawings, paintings and photographs, the book will be a worthwhile addition to library and private collections. High quality in all directions.
