This anthology of flight is not only extremely well edited, it has the further virtue of freshness---it concentrates on the important but little-known or forgotten facets of the development of aviation. The classics of flight--Ben Franklin's experiments, Dieriot the Wright Brothers, etc.---are of course included. So are the important military flight stories of both World Wars. But here too is a rare account of Zeppelin raids on England in 1914-1916, of Spanish Civil War flying, of Lindbergh as a war pilot (P-38 flights in the South Pacific), a Zero pilot's story, Amelia Earhart as she was as a very young woman learning to fly, and fascinating descriptions of the first Jet dogfights, in Korea in 1950.
