BATTLE REPORT: The Atlantic War

This was originally scheduled for November publication and reported 9/15/45:- ""Volume II the first dealt in meticulous detail with Pearl Harbor attack. This one is infinitely more interesting reading covering as it does -- from official sources -- the whole of the Atlantic War on the sea, over the battle areas which included the North Atlantic, the Arctic Seas, the Garibbean, the coastwise and cross Atlantic battle against the wolf packs, the Mediterranean. The long struggle in which the American navy changed from the hunted to the hunters. The story of great ships and small -- of the Atlantic War won by escort carriers, destroyers, destroyer escorts, the necessities of alteration in organization, the new elements introduced with the leaseholds exchanged for the 50 old destroyers, the Greenland struggle, the occupation of Iceland and its results, the anti-submarine war in all its aspects, the patchwork of makeshift at the start, stories of the armed guards on merchant vessels, the convoys, the patrol wing. And throughout, the part the Navy played in invasion -- amphibious operations -- Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, Normandy, Southern France -- and, incongruously enough, the crossing of the Rhine. Odd bits of interesting data such as salvage projects in the Bay of Naples, building of ports on the beachheads, and so on. Much of the material can only now be told -- much is still secret; there's grand pace of narrative, a lively sense of drama, and permanent value as a source book. The appendices include a section on the training program, the inclusion of women in the service, the list of navel vessels lost in the Atlantic War, of transports, of awards.
