Heavy going for anyone seeking entertainment, this, analytical, socially conscious aerutiny of ""multicultural"" peoples, in 1918 and the war's end. There is ance, German English, who under the guidance of his spiritual father, a Quaker, has becomes scientific note taker of songs, speech, behaviour in the anthropological -- ethnological studies, there is Eleanora, profiteer's daughter, rootless as himself, whom he loves and marries in Bulgaria, where -- in 1918 -- his German heritage is a threat from both sides. They become involved in international politics, plus their personal problems. Eventually, Eleanora's alliance with the Communist Party, and the prolongation of Lance's case after the amialice are put behind them and they look forward to reunion in America, and a wider conception of world understanding.
