An Autobiographical Journey, with Certain Detours, from Salem to New Orleans"" which traces the lifework of Father Murphy, ""New England Irish"", and one of nine children in a family tied together by poverty, affection and mutual respect. His early attraction to the Catholic Church was confirmed by the winning of a scholarship to Boston College, and before long he was able to follow in the footsteps of an older brother and study for the priesthood. First in Baltimore, later in New York, his long friendship with Eddie Dowling enabled him to take a trip to Europe, and after that he settled in New Orleans where he was able to work towards ""a better day and a better deal for Negroes""- the sustaining concern throughout his lifetime. His work, as a teacher and as the head of The Blessed Sacrament Mission, his writing (he is the author of the best-selling The Scarlet Lily and Pere Antoine), his accomplishments and his contacts- these fill in a personal narrative which reflects a certain jovial fellowship as well as a deep dedication. The market, however, is primarily Catholic in its designation.
