WAR AND CHILDREN

Anna Freud is a famous daughter of a famous man. She has done a tremendous service to humanity in the three nurseries in London, run for the Foster Parents Plan for War Children, with the aid of an American psychologist, Dorothy Burlingham. Journey for Margaret gave the public some idea of the human side of these nurseries. Now comes this serious case study, which shares the findings of the nurseries with people interested in the mental health of children everywhere, during war years, and for peace-time education. There are four main objectives:- to repair damage done by war conditions, including break-up of families; to forestall harm: to follow out research on psychological needs of children, to instruct in a sound pattern of nursery life. Analyses of types of reactions, case histories, diaries of the nurseries as related to training schemes, special emphasis on the mothers' visits -- all this makes this an important volume for social workers, libraries, educators, physicians, psychiatrists, etc. Too bad the price is high.
