Temple, Wisconsin, population 1208, and the day of Miss Lizzie's retirement after fifty years of teaching, as the incidents in her life- and the lives in which she has been influential- are recalled. There was her love affair, when she was thirty, with a violinist in New York, sacrificed to her profession- and making her now decide that Lou, a younger teacher, should marry her man rather than lose him. There was Don, the pastor's son, and her half acknowledged love for him- Don who came to a sad and shameful end. There was Enid Brown, who married a Jew, and abandoned him and their child- under the pressure of a bigoted father; etc. etc. A certain homely, human warmth here- but a market seems fairly non-definable.
