KIRKUS REVIEW

O'Brien feels that within the last twenty-five years the American short story has come into its own, casting off hide-bound rules, and turning from the far afield to reflect America, its people, manners, tempo. This collection justifies his claim and presents the most representative; Dreiser, Irvin S. Cobb, Hergesheimer, Hemingway, Anderson, Lardner, La Farge, Marquand, Dorothy Parker, Willa Cather, Kay Boyle, Faulkner, Caldwell, Farrell, Saroyan, Steinbeck, etc. From the entertainment standpoint, not as good as the Maugham TELLER OF TALES (Doubleday, Doran) but a significant contribution as a guidepost to the modern short story.
