WARRIORS WITH WINGS

Bowen's They Flew to Glory (1965, p. 1049-J355) written for a younger age group had a sense of excitement about the original Lafayette Escadrille which this book lacks and Jablonski's way with an anecdote is not nearly so good as those to be found in the 1962 adult book by Arch Whitehouse, Legion of the Lafayette. Thus, Warriors with Wings, in its selective, hero story approach drops below benchmarks of excellence in presentation and writing for the age group that falls between the child and the adult. Interest in early aviation has been quickened by the movie Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines and WWI is still holding reader attention. This book may benefit from both these marketing factors, but its value for a special audience of younger readers seems negligible.
