Growing old along with Dr. Bortz is a more heartening vista, a repudiation of the youth-centered focus which has distorted the image of old age. Synchronizing various knowns, philosophical, biological, social, Dr. Bortz describes the physiology of living longer in terms of the body's resources and reserves; the process of aging which can be emotional and nervous as well as physical; social attitudes and in particular the economic problem of the old age (and medical care- at length); re-structuring the point of view-- the decade from 50 to 60, like adolescence, is a marked period of transition; and finally concluding with specific recommendations. Helpful, hopeful guidance.
