ANOTHER OPHELIA

By

Pub Date: Feb. 2nd, 1938
Publisher: Longmans, Green

Another writer who has stopped out of his usual vein, and wandered down strange and morbid paths. the story is set in a Vermont town, and one is plunged into a murky atmosphere, surrounding the houschold of a simple proprietor of a pool parlor, his wife, frightened, tired, striving to keep the daughter -- at 37 still adolescent wrapped in cotton wool; and the daughter, obsessed with frustrated sex, writing to an unknown George through a matrimonlal journal, ridden with morbid fears. Then the pages of time are turned back, and in stream of consciousness manner, first through the mother, then the father, the tragic story is built up, bit by bit. Not a book for the avorage reader, nor yet sound enough psychologically, to appeal to those who likes The Outward Room, etc.
