A bold, modern interpretation of this well-known poem, from a Canadian publishing house dedicated to recognizing new artists. Multicolored borders frame the abstract figures and scenes depicting this familiar verse, while on opposite pages, the text appears against a white background. The flat art, executed in vibrant colors, is simply composed, conveying the essence of the subject--a technique well suited to the eye of the young viewer. The overall impact of these ""silk screen type paintings"" is uneven. The use of color in a night scene with the singing owl appears too heavy and dark; the design of the bongo trees is unappealing and awkward; however, the cat, a luminous white form, is captured effectively, and many of the sailing scenes offer interesting perspectives. An acceptable purchase for libraries seeking to add an additional version of this poem to their collection.
