MODERN AMERICAN PROSE

Here's a book that every well-stocked library -- private or public -- should have on its shelves (and frequently, off them). The Table of Contents is sufficient evidence of its importance, that and the reputation of the editor for sound judgment and thorough appreciation of not only the scholarly approach but the popular angle. This is an anthology of modern prose, a brilliant panorama of our American literary gallery. The significant thing, to me, was the selection of material, significant always, but never descending to the obvious. The period covered is 1915-1934. The writers included are: Gertrude Stein, Van Wych Brooks, Willa Cather, Paul Elmer More, Edith Wharton, Randoulph Bourne, James Branch Cabell, Theodore Dreiser, John Reed, Joseph Hergesheimer, George Santayana, Frank Moore Colby, Sherwood Anderson, Stuart Sherman, H. L. Mencken, Carl Van Vechten, E. E. Cummings, John Dos Passos, Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Beer, Thyra Samter Winslow, George Jean Nathan, Mary Austin, Ring Lardner, Albert Jay Nock, Lewis Mumford, Maxwell Anderson and Lawrence Stallings, William Beebe, Sinclair Lewis, Floyd Dell, Joseph Wood Krutch, Carl Sandburg, Thornton Wilder, Ernest Hemingway, Glenway Wescott, Evelyn Scott, T. S. Eliot, Hendrik Van Loon, Elizabeth Maddox Roberts, Waldo Frank, Edmund Wilson, Eleanor Rowland Wembridge, Pearl Buck, Alvà Johnston, Carl Becker, Clarence Day, Ludwig Lewisohn, Mark Van Doren, Julia Peterkin, James Weldon Johnson, Burton Rascoe, Erskine Caldwell, Albert Halper, Alexander Woollcott, Constance Rourke, Carl Van Doren and others.
