Among Europeans the name of Schillebeeckx ranks with that of Karl Rahner, S.J., in the field of theology, though in different ways. This book introduces one of this distinguished theologian's most important works to United States readers. The purpose here is to direct attention to sacrementality in religion to clarify how the sacraments are the means for human beings to have a personal encounter with God. This is indeed a refreshing and revitalizing look at the ""waters of life"" which cannot help but provide further incentive to go to them more fully. Though the perspective is unique and fitting, the performance will unfortunately limit the audience to those professionally interested. There is little question that priests particularly and teachers of religion, too, will find much in this book that does not appear in standard treatments of the sacraments. And if this will give them greater capacity to show how the sacramental way is the hidden road to Emmaus on which men are accompanied by the Lord, it will certainly be good for them to get to know Father Schillebeeckx.
