Eleanor Farjeon, who has provided the introduction, spent a long time keeping green the memory of Edward Thomas, a minor English poet. He was killed at 39 in WWI and had been writing poetry for less than a decade before his death. He had been an essayist, but after meeting Robert Frost, with whom he formed a close friendship, he began writing nature verse in a clear vein which hinted at a promise terminated by the war that wasted so many poets. His simplicity in line, meter and image make this small collection primarily valuable for students trying their own hand at experimental expression in verse.
