Novelist Luke Kelly, with his wife Sara, come to East Falls, Connecticut to join the circle of gifted beautiful people, not just rotten rich this time, avant-garded by Clifford Marshall. But lots of real names are dropped and shoulders rubbed -- ""Phi!"" Roth and ""Bill"" Buckley while James Jones is overheard on the transcontinental telephone saying ""Hello, fuckhead. Comment ca va?"" Even if liquefied by bourbon and sex -- there are problems: Luke with his book which is held up by the possibility of a lawsuit by a banker (and Marshall suspects he might have lifted it from the notebooks of his afflatus, his hometown lady librarian); Marshall picks up a dose from a young college student; Sara drinks too much and drifts toward Marshall; etc. etc. until Luke wisely decides that living the literary life in East Falls is not very salubrious. . . . Comment ca va? Not very good.
