Hoyt has collected many examples of the personal experiences of Asians in America and Africa, tracing the fortunes of many different classes of immigrants and the history of discrimination against them -- including attempts to exclude cheap labor and the disgraceful internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Informative as these case histories are, there is a distracting lack of continuity -- chapters on the Indian communities of South Africa, Kenya and Uganda are mixed in among those about Chinese and Japanese Americans and the sad fate of these overseas Indians seems almost an afterthought tacked on to what is basically an Asian success story. Useful background perhaps, but repetitiously, fuzzily organized.
