BROWN AMERICANS

This has its basis in the author's first book, Brown America, but is not a revised edition of that text. Here are facts and figures about the Negro race and the multi-faceted problems it presents. History, before and after slavery; population, and the migrations north and west; health, with a record far below the white; education, beginning with the pioneering of John Fee in Kentucky, continuing with mission schools, the founding of Hampton, Fisk, Howard, and the still existing neglect in the southern public school system; livelihood, and the discrimination against the Negro; politics and the poll tax; the war and today's mounting tension due to segregation, lynchings, discrimination. Finally, the Negro's contribution to the cultural forms. This lacks, perhaps, the readability of Ottley's New World A Comin', the thoroughness of Myrdal's An American Dilemma, but is a sound, objective presentation of the case.
