This tale has been expanded into a full-length book from a single chapter in Autumn Across America. It is the true story of Gerald Wear, a man both deaf and dumb, and of his faithful German shepherd, Poncho, who disappeared on a camping trip in the Wallowa mountains of western Oregon. Ranchers and hunters provided Gerald Wear with many leads, but the search always ended in failure. Just when it seemed that physical exhaustion would end it completely, Poncho appeared first as a dim speck in the snow and then life-size in the master's arms. Paul Lantz's expressive pencil drawings capture the spirit of the sad but hopeful hunter and his relentless search through the rugged cold country of Oregon.
