THE STONES AND THE SCRIPTURES

Professor Yamauchi's book represents an effort at selective summarization of archaeological evidence in support of the Scriptures, with emphasis on discoveries since 1960. The first part deals with the events of the Old Testament from an evidential standpoint -- the Egyptian exile and the conquest of the Promised Land, the reigns of Saul, David and Solomon, etc. The second part is a brief treatment of the historical Jesus and Paul; the third, a survey of the contents of the Dead Sea Scrolls. A final section attempts to place in perspective the various problems presented by the search for archaeological evidence of Biblical accounts. The author does not pretend to write as anything but a believer and an evangelical believer at that. He therefore leans toward a literal interpretation of scriptural texts, and his approach to archaeological evidence is colored by that tendency.
