Here, as she did in her delicate illustrations for cummings' Little Tree (1987), Ray provides a rich visual background for a favorite holiday-related poem. Glowing like a jack-o'-lantern's eyes from the shadows of an autumn night, her ghosts and goblins, devils and witches, and ""little hoppy happy/toad in tweeds/tweeds/little itchy mousies"" are at once pleasantly mysterious and scary as well as cozily familiar. A lovely rendition to appeal to young imaginations and to heighten appreciation for cummings' sparkling language.
