The wit and wisdom which characterized the late and great Pope John XXIII are brought sharply into focus in Henri Fesquet's compilation of some of the Pontiff's most memorable ""sayings, anecdotes, maxims and recollections of serious or amusing occasions"". Monsieur Fesquet, journalist and author, does the world a service in putting together this refreshing collection of Pope John's own words so filled with ""the vitality of the Gospels."" Here we meet a man with a keen sense of humor who laughed often; and who had the great gift for combining ""humor with goodness and humility with supernatural greatness."" Pope John's personality seems to shine through his words with greater clarity than it does in more formalized biographies. For example, when a flustered Nun greeted him with the statement, ""Most Holy Father, I am the Superior of the Holy Spirit,"" the Pope replied, ""Well I must say you're lucky. I am only the Vicar of Jesus Christ."" This is a book to be dipped into often so that readers of all faiths can come ""face to face"" again with the most universally beloved man of our age.
