The influence and scope of the Julius Rosenwald foundation will determine to a large extent the market for this story of the Rosenwald Fund. Informative, interesting in parts, the sum total is too statistical for general popular consumption. Too bad it could not have been presented in more human terms. There's a bit of biographical material on the son of imigrant parents who became president of Sears Roebuck, and a great philanthropist. He established the Fund originally in 1917 to improve the conditions among Negroes, and an enormous amount has been accomplished in setting up rural schools in the south, establishing libraries, improving teacher training and vocational facilities, aiding Negro institutions of higher learning, medical and public health work, giving impetus to improved race relations, awarding numerous fellowships in literature, the arts, science, etc. The Fund was planned to run on principle, not on interest, and, as of 1948 has finished its work.
