HUNKY JOHNNY

The problem of national assimilation and adjustment through the story of John Opalko, whose ambition was to get away from his ""Hunky"" background and ""go white"" -- wh self-conscious inferiorities kept bringing him back to his own people. In love with J Howland whom he'd met at Chicago University, he keeps raising the barrier of their wor his first generation father who runs a ""speak"", his brother who works for a Syndicate, his sister who married a no-good boy who climbed on the bottle. Jean, recognizing his cowardice, tells him off and Johnny goes back to his own kind with Mary Korbs, the g he'd had in high school, until external events force the situation and Jean gets Johnny to override his doubts. Hard talk, frequent fleshy interludes for a convincing a story conflict and adaptation.
