THE CRIMSON SHAWL

This is somewhat unfamiliar material and therefore a valuable addition to American history background books. The Acadians (familiar to most children through Evangeline) were shipped to different sections, and this is a story of a small group of these French colonials who were sent to the Puritan town of Ipswich. It is specifically the story of Mary, who at 13 was forced to be bound girl to the Cogswells and to face the suspicion and enmity of the daughter Susan and her schoolmates. Eventually, she proves her loyalty to her new home and new country. The action is sometimes entertain, the story involved in too much detailed history, but on the whole it is a good picture of the times, of the French-Indian wars.
