The boy heroes of Indian stories seem almost always to be paragons of courage, able to withstand rigorous manhood tests and demonstrations of bravery. It's a welcome change to find in this book an Indian boy who is afraid. Poor little Chipmunk tries hard to keep his fear of the forest secret, but he turns chicken when his father takes him hunting and he flunks his first lesson. In disgrace, he is given the womanish job of caring for Little Brother, but when Little Brother disappears into the snowy woods, Chipmunk learns to overcome his fright. Chipmunk is more distinctively little boy than Indian, and will be welcomed by the younger readers in this age group. The pen-and-ink drawings are warmly natural.
