LITTLE BEAR ISLAND

A very pleasant story of Jane and Keith and their happy summer vacation on Little Bear Island. You can smell the pines and touch the water. Short, successful episodes with good build-up and climax in each little chapter. Birthday parties, puppies, kittens, boats, ducks, sleeping alone in a tent, and all the parts of a wonderful vacation with relatives. Good family relationships, an easy awareness of natural surroundings and a pleasant story combine to make this a good, young book. The clear type and direct style, that is rarely precious, will satisfy the older self-readers in this age group, while for reading aloud to the younger age it is perfect ""chapter"" reading. Jeanne Bendick's illustrations are more than dependable.
