THE MIXED-UP MYSTERY SMELL

The mystery smell that little Kate reports to junior detectives Marsha and Nobby comes from that empty old house on Grizzly Hill (""'The one that's supposed to be haunted?' 'That's it' ""); after Kate fails to transport the smell in a cardboard box, the three children hurry to Grizzly Hill to investigate. Beginning readers hoping to get wind of a real mystery might be disappointed to discover that the strange smell, spooky shadows and thumping, bumping, spanking sounds only come from grandmotherly newcomer Mrs. Birdie who is making bread; perhaps, though, those who follow the lead of these detectives-turned-bakers will find the old lady's whole wheat recipe worth sniffing out.
