True stories of unsung canine heroes from the Alps to the Cumberland Mountains. With 28 stories in brief compass, they suffer from brevity, and end by being merely anecdotal. There is not enough build-up to capture the reader's imagination and sympathy, so they lose out on the main ""bait"" of the average animal story. Then too, the author is inclined to write down to his audience. There is one story that is an exception, -- the story of the Alpine postman and the performing dachshund. Factual information, on types of dogs and their functional use (Seeing Eye, etc.) gives this book a certain reference value. There is a good deal of practical information about handling dogs. Don't sell on the story value; only young readers who are vitally interested in anything to do with dogs will appreciate it.
