THE MEXICAN BIRD

This is a rather disappointingly offhand, uncohesive story by this author/illustrator whose many popular books include the Little Pear series. However, 9-year-old Jennifer Lawson and her friends are intimately and sharply personalized despite the simple but smooth prose. Many girls will sympathize completely with Jenny's enjoyment in delicately handling beautiful and fragile objects and her annoyance with the carelessness of others. They will also be able to share her realistic and unexaggerated interest in the shells and birds of her neighborhood.
