THE GIRL ON THE DEER by Eleanor Frances Lattimore

THE GIRL ON THE DEER

From her (ad)vantage point on the front lawn's iron deer, almost nine Josephine Angela Spaulding waves to the public school bus each afternoon; her French governess, Miss Corrie, tutors her, and there's a nurse for little brother Eric as well as a couple, Rosa and Andy, to tend the imposing house and grounds -- all this in a small upstate New York town today. From eleven-year-old Bruce Aldrich, hired to help Andy (whom he calls Mr. Herter), Josephine eventually learns that the local children pity her; she's been so insulated that she's never noticed her lack of friends. The situation is as unendearing as it is dated, and the injection of misconduct so transparent it can't be called a mystery (Miss Corrie's connivance with a thief) adds little to nothing.
