Good material difficult to locate, and should be in every school library and public library children's room. Well-edited stories of American heroines, not the general run of the obvious figures of history, but some fourteen characters, from Anne Burras, who was the first English girl to be married and to set up a home in the new colonies of Virginia, to Mary Ann Ball Bickordyko, who mothered and nursed the soldiers during the Civil War. The outline follows the expanding frontier, so there is a story for almost every section of the country, south, north, east, mid-west and far west, each preceded by a few brief paragraphs giving the historical background. Diversity of interest and excellent reading.
