BECKY'S BOARDING HOUSE by Eleanor Thomas

BECKY'S BOARDING HOUSE

Not too sharp a story about the members of a central Ohio Brownie troop. Notable among the girls are Becky, who runs a boarding house for other people's pets, and Deborah, newly come from the eastern seaboard and whose desire it is to be a mariner scout. Lots of good, sweetly expressed Brownie doings- camping at a woodsy cabin, discovering the minnows and tadpoles, the ""Ohio-ing"" of Deborah, musical teas, a meaningful flying-up ceremony. Meat for the market, but it is bland. Too, the author's habit of saying things too hastily makes for confusion and an occasional re-reading is necessary. Gertrude Howe's pencil drawings are solemn and wistful, cleverly photographic.
