Elena is a Spanish-American woman who lives on the west coast, and daily, since the depression, has fought a singularly feminine battle against blindness. When a childhood ailment finally renders the strong minded Elena blind, she succumbs to despair. Having won a battle over her husband's tendency to philander, having defeated the economic problems of the depression, Elena, a mother of two young children, feels unable to cope with her loss of sight. But faith, friendship, and resolve once more assert themselves in her life as Elena embarks on a career in which she instructs the blind in cooking, a career which leads her to fame and immense personal satisfaction. Artlessly written, the vivid Spanish nature of Elena is as interesting here as is the account of triumph over blindness.
