WORK AND SING by Elie Siegmeister

An interesting experiment -- this selection of boats ""songs that built America -- drawn from songs of the sea, of the West, of the river boats, of street e in cities and work in the country. The introduction gives the background in America industry, and specific introductions for each division places the songs, old and new, their functional value, and their place in American folk lore. Julian Bselton has contributed robust line drawings, appropriate to the feel of the songs, and the musical arrangements are simplified for junior consumption. Radio has familiarized listerners with many of these songs -- through the cowboy singers, the ""Old Wayfaring stranger"" and others.
