This story of Civil War intrigue, although a product of the author's imagination in general plot, is nevertheless based on real events and includes real people such as the author's grandfather and hero of the story, Charles Castle. Suspicion of their Captain, Jeremish Jones, increases with each incriminating bit of evidence Charles and his companions gather on their arduous trek toward the Atlanta Campaign. Meanwhile, General Hooker (Confederate army) has employed the espionage services of his orderly Dade Henry to deal with Jones and receive information. In a tense climax, Charlie captures both the Yankee traitor and the rebel spy only to find that the latter is his own beloved cousin of boyhood summers in Atlanta. The tragedy of his cousin's death forces Charlie's confrontation of war's ugliness and endows a rousing tale with a potent dimension.
