Flying fish have an odd fascination when one meets them in the tropics. But one wonders whether the idea of flying fish is something small children can understand as anything but a fairy tale, until they see for themselves. However, this is a poetic and beautiful book, which makes the sea and the problem of the fish that was different readily acceptable without question of true and false. There are some ideas here too:- lessons that children can learn painlessly as they listen to the mistakes that Topple makes before he learns from Wingfin how to use his special gift. the Clement Hurd pictures in soft-toned linoleum block reproductions makes this one of the loveliest looking books of the season. Its success depends on how a grown up presents it.
