RUTHERFORD B. HAYES

Like Hayes' presidency--quiet, efficient but unimpressive. Except for details on schooling, this concentrates on his political life almost entirely, relegating his wife (but not the ""Lemonade Lucy"" nickname) and children to a few subordinate clauses, and extending only token recognition to other interests. Otherwise ""he serves his party best who serves his country best"" is an indication of the straightforward, upright gentleman from Ohio whose political allies negotiated with southern Democrats to give him a majority of one in the Electoral College. Adequate if not penetrating.
