Pretty fervid novel of a mother's love, denied and rejected, which is for women solely and rentals largely. Kathleen, living abroad, falls in love with Kurt, who is married, Kurt who is also loved by her closest friend, Ursel. Kathleen has an affair with him, becomes pregnant, and is arbitrarily taken over by Ursel who sees her through the birth of the child, takes the child as her own, and ships Kathleen back to America, where she marries Eric, Meantime, Ursel uses the child as a lever to get Kurt to marry her. After the Nazis come into power and war breaks out with England, Ursel sends Nik to Kathleen for safety. Nik is distant, difficult, elusive -- a product of Nazi upbringing, and Kathleen makes no headway with him. When he hears his ""mother"" is ill, he insists on returning to Germany, and Kathleen makes a second renunciation. Plus sentiment.
