Amy is homesick when the family first moves from Texas to California-lonely, afraid of the mountains, hating anything different from life at home. Her brother Marsh is irrepressibly exuberant about everything new. By the end she gains two friends, finds Mount Shasta inspiring, proves herself a capable young lady by giving orders when Uncle Marshall has a heart attack. Set in the days of stagecoaches and the new railway line, a familiar backdrop to an all-too-familiar situation, the story moves slowly with few eye-catching incidents, and Amy's constant kvetching would get anybody down.
