HOW TO TRAVEL WITH GROWNUPS

This is one of those exercises in picture-book irony in which the straight-faced text dispenses admonitions while the pictures show two little boys disregarding them with abandon. It's also one of those picture-book enterprises with a spot of grown-up coyness at the core. But Hazard's unpretentious cartoons are frisky and approachable. And you don't have to recognize the stops (though Hazard makes each scene eminently recognizable) to be amused at the sight of these hyperkinetic kids taking off on an elevator (""stay with your parents""), riding bareback on a lofty gargoyle (""try not to set a bad example for the younger children""), losing balance on camelback (""pay attention to your ice cream""), and generally cutting up. For orientation and a touch of class, Hazard marks the pages with passport stamps from Amsterdam, Italy, Turkey, and elsewhere. Once seen, it might come to mind next time you come across the phrase ""whirl-wind tour.
