IRIS IN WINTER

Smart, brittle, sophisticated, Iris Drake is sent to High Ambo to have a try at being a newspaperwoman and to investigate the school which had sent home the son of her paper's owner under unfavorable circumstances. Her sister Caroline provides respectability and Iris has an easy in. She makes assorted, and likable, schoolboy friends, she falls in love with an unworldly, dedicated master, who rouses her to irate frenzy, she tangles bitterly, assiduously, with her brother Robert who arrives to stay, with his childishly impetuous bride-to-be. Caroline's voice is tenderly cared for by the German music master, and her love affair is straightened out; Robert, in his highhanded arrogance, settles the matter between the school and an old ogre of a peer, and helps to smooth Iris' romantic path. Intelligent, bright eyeing of English county patterns, and neatly effective, and often funny, portraying of character and idiosyncrasies.
