Very feminine interpretation of woman's marital problems, in a longspan novel of English life, before and during two wars, as Margaret reviews her marriage with George, in which her determination to hold the family together for the sake of their five children, has overridden her knowledge of George's duplicity, ruthlessness and weaknesses. She had married him for money and finds out her mistake too late; she holds the threat of divorce as a weapon to bring him to heel, stands between him and the children's chance to lead their own lives, and conceals her love for Hugh. And at the end, the straight and narrow path brings its own reward. Rentals.
