THE WHITE HORSE

This is another of the beloved Sally books. She sells with Andrew on the Fair American from Maine for Genoa, but they never reach their destination because they are captured by pirates. Taken to Morocco, Sally is sold as a slave girl, though fully conscious of the cruelty of her captors and the dangers to all foreigners, she keeps her eyes open to enjoy the beauty of Africa and the differences in customs. She saves a pet lion, arouses the favor of the Sultan by telling him stories of her home life and finally is allowed her freedom to go back to the boat. Captain Patterson who has escaped early in the story turns up again on the homeward bound vessel. It is fine to give little girls a picture of North African life in this period. Naturally this is a well-told, top-notch book, Miss Coatsworth and Miss Sewell are always dependable.
