This is the first American edition of a book which appeared in Japan in 1938. Cricket is a Japanese boy with so much respect for the written word that he saves every scrap of paper he sees blowing around on the streets. One day he finds a page torn from an old book, and discovers that as soon as he finishes reading it, it becomes re-written. Readers will be glad that in the retelling each story stays put -- because they are likely to want to have them reread. The seven stories, each quite different but distinctively oriental have been beautifully told, simple in conception with the most refined detail.
