HERE I STAY

This well known writer of children's books has drawn on her deep knowledge and love of Maine for a setting of her first novel, --the story of a girl who refused to leave the home she and her father had made and cared for, when -- soon after his death -- her neighbors left in a body for distant Ohio, and easier living than the rigors of Maine gave them. This is the story of her year alone, helped for a time by visiting Indians, and of how she found that the vision of the old Indian woman could be brought to truth. It is a story of the season's round, of nature close at hand, of woman and man. Thin in plot, with nothing of impact of one personality on another, the story yet has a certain strength and power to charm. Not a conventional novel of the soil. Scarcely even a conventional novel, but ripe with the feel and sight and sound and scent of Maine in the early days.
