A TOAST TO THE KING

Three young girls, orphaned sisters, Tory by tradition and inheritance, live alone across the river from Boston, at the time of the siege of Boston, and stubbornly maintain their principles in the face of mounting opposition and suspicion. They lose friends and lovers; they face attacks on their right to a home; they drink tea until the patriots destroy their hoard. Years later, in old age, they still cherish the annual gift of tea from the British officer they had sheltered, and their loyalty is crowned by a letter and a gift from the King himself, a triumph to which the citizens of a free Boston come to drink a toast.
