The Enjoyment of Literature and Discovering Poetry are two of the most distinguished contributions to general literary criticism and commentary that I have read, both books that inspire one to reread old favorities and to track down new. Now comes Discovering Drama, and for some reason difficult to define, it fails to achieve the same sense of adventure and zest which distinguished the other two books. From the point of view of information and analysis, it is a thorough and enlightening place of scholarship. From the angle of personal enthusiasm, it lacks the vital spark, None the less, it should prove invaluable to the student approaching the subject with a certain background and an cagerness for an objective general view. Miss Drew is up to the minute in her inclusion of Auden, Isherwood and T. S. Eliot -- and reaches back into the classics with the Greek drama.
