THE DAYS BETWEEN

We liked Singing Beach and this is a good second novel. A story of fear, escape and romance on the refugee road to Bordeaux. Elizabeth Foster writes well -- if not too seriously --with a deceptive and ingratiating ease. Her characters, of the social and monied international elite, are nicely done. Sufficiently prominent to be wanted by the Nazis, they find themselves stranded in a ruined house off the main road, ered by the realization of the loss of the world they had known. Conflict, maturity and love grow out of their experiences as they share fear of apprehension by the gestapo, hunger and passport troubles. Tense, appealing reading, well above average rentals, particularly for women.
