ONCE IN THE FIRST TIMES

Legends and fairy stories from the Philippine Islands which show the Islanders' rich imagination. Many of their tales deal with the beginnings of the earth, the stars, the creation of birds and other animals, even with the great world flood way back in early times; others tell of the first people to live on the Islands and how they came to be there. Animals and birds play an active part in important events and have a special wisdom. It is noteworthy that there are no heavy retributive or revenge themes, no swiftly and sharply administered punishments for wrong-doing. Altogether most of the stories are sensible, grave without being somber, amusing without being very lighthearted.
